The Brother Who Taught Her How to Care for Others — Lexus On The Park

Flight Story #1493

Los Angeles, California > Toronto, Ontario

Some people shape your life simply by the way they love and serve others.
For Patricia, that person has always been her brother, Rick.
Five years older than her, Rick was the sibling who was always there — through childhood, adulthood, and every chapter in between. Their bond only grew stronger over the years, built on deep conversations, shared compassion, and a mutual understanding of what it means to care for people during life’s hardest moments.
Rick spent many years serving as a Catholic priest, dedicating his life to helping others and supporting his community.
Watching the way he gave of himself had a lasting impact on Patricia. She believes his example helped inspire her own path into nursing, where she spent 20 years working as a pediatric oncology nurse, standing beside children and families during unimaginable moments.
“We had many talks about death and dying,” Patricia shared. “I always felt very privileged to be there.”
Now, the roles have changed.
Rick was recently diagnosed with ALS, and his health has declined quickly. He is now in a wheelchair, has very limited movement, and is no longer able to speak on the phone. Patricia shared that he is becoming weaker each day and struggling more and more.
As his condition progressed, ALS Canada began helping organize one final wish for Rick — a picnic bringing together the people he loves most on June 21st.
For Patricia, there was no question about wanting to be there.
“When I moved to California, he was the one who visited me the most,” she shared, remembering the many moments they spent together over the years.
Now she hopes to give that same love back to him.
But traveling from California to Toronto on short notice wasn’t easy.
Patricia is retired and caring for her special needs son at home. With airline prices rising quickly, the trip became financially overwhelming.
Still, the need to go never changed.
Because this was more than a family gathering.
It was a chance to sit beside her brother one more time. To share memories, laughter, and love while he is still able to be surrounded by the people who matter most to him.
Thanks to the generosity of Lexus On The Park, Patricia was able to travel from Los Angeles, California to Toronto, Ontario to attend Rick’s final family picnic.
When the flight was booked, Patricia expressed: “I will definitely send a pic of us from the celebration!! I am beyond excited!”
This flight is more than a journey.
It is a sister showing up for the brother who helped shape her life, her career, and her understanding of co
Because sometimes the greatest gift we can give someone is simply being there while there is still time.
