When Crystal learned that her mother had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, she wanted the chance to spend time with her while she still could.
After initially believing the cancer was only in her one place, doctors discovered it had metastasized. The diagnosis was devastating, and Crystal knew time together had become even more precious.
As a single mother supporting her family, travel was not something she could easily afford.
“Moving to New Brunswick on my 16th birthday I haven’t gotten to spend too much time with my mom as being a single mother didn’t leave room for travel.”
When she thought about her favorite memories with her mother, it wasn’t grand vacations or special occasions that came to mind.
“My fondest memories were my mom taking me camping as a child numerous times.”
For Crystal, those simple moments together were what mattered most.
“To me it’s the little things of spending time together that matter and it’s heartbreaking thinking I may not get to see her again.”
But this story wasn’t only about Crystal.
Her six-year-old daughter Claire was also hoping to see her grandmother again. Because of distance and finances, the two had only spent time together in person a handful of times. Most of their connection came through video calls.
In Claire’s application, Crystal shared one of her favorite things about those calls:
“Claire said she loves face timing her grandma to show her pictures she draws and her tricks on the gymnastics bar.”
Knowing how important this visit would be for both mother and daughter, Give A Mile’s Flight Review Team approved flights for Crystal and Claire, allowing them to travel together to Toronto.
When Crystal received the news, her gratitude was immediate:
