When Taylan learned that his father was in the Intensive Care Unit and expected to pass within the next few days, he knew he needed to get to Vancouver as quickly as possible.
The timing was urgent, but the cost of travel was out of reach.
In his application, Taylan shared:
“I don’t have any money; I don’t have any savings; my taxes haven’t come in yet.”
Taylan’s father, Adona, had raised him and his sister after gaining custody of them in 2008. Those years together left a lasting impact on him.
When asked what this flight would mean, Taylan focused on something simple but deeply personal.
“It would mean a lot for my dad to be OK, for me and my sister to be there with him, and for him to hear our voices.”
He also reflected on the many ways people have always connected him to his father.
“I am the spitting image of him, and everyone says I look like him, and laugh like him.”
And before his father passed, there was something important he wanted him to know.
“I think it’d be important for him to hear that before he passes.”
The application also shared the cultural importance of being present.
“It would be important, culturally, spiritually, for Adona’s children to be present at the Elder’s final ceremony before he passes.”
Thanks to the generosity of Lexus On The Park, Taylan received a compassionate flight to Vancouver, giving him the opportunity to be with his father during his final days.
When he learned his flight had been approved, he immediately responded with gratitude.
“Thank you so much for my approval.”
The hospital social worker who helped support the application was equally grateful, writing:
“That is amazing! Wow! I’m lost for words…!”
