Flight Stories #1438 and #1439
Toronto, Ontario > Entebbe, Uganda
At just 33 years old, Viane made one final request when there was no further treatment available for his cancer. He wanted to go home.
His care team sent Give A Mile an application and shared these powerful words with us “Viane has spent the last four years fighting a war that would have broken most men. He did it with a quiet dignity that those of us at St. Michael’s and in the Toronto community will never forget. But as his body grows tired, his heart has turned toward one place: home”.
In his application, it was shared that he is now in palliative care and that his time is limited. His wish was not for further treatment, but for peace. He hoped to return to Uganda while still alive, to be surrounded by family and familiar ground.
One memory stood out in his application. Those supporting him shared that during a conversation, the only thing that brought a smile to his face was speaking about the red soil of Uganda and the warmth of his mother’s embrace. They wrote, “This flight isn’t just about logistics or repatriation. It’s about a son’s right to be held by his mother one last time.”
They described him as a warrior choosing to lay down his shield in the place where he first learned to walk. To them, this journey meant that while illness had taken his health, it would not take his peace.
Making this journey required extraordinary coordination. Medical clearance was needed before booking. An experienced caregiver traveled alongside him. Plans were arranged in Uganda to ensure he would be received immediately by a specialized oncology and palliative team upon arrival. The team were thrilled when together we were able to make these flights happen—
“This is extraordinary news. I’m almost tearful! Thank you and your team and the donors so very much.”
Vianey's Care Team
On February 11th, Viane arrived safely at Entebbe International Airport and was transferred directly into medical care under the supervision of a local specialist. The Uganda Community and care team later shared their gratitude, confirming his safe arrival and continued support.
They wrote that this mission would not have been possible without the stabilization and dedicated care he received in Toronto, and the involvement of Give A Mile that allowed him to travel home with dignity.
This flight was not just about distance. It was about honoring a final wish. It was about ensuring that illness did not take away the right to return home.
Because of the generosity of Plusgrade, this final journey home became possible. Their support ensured that distance did not stand in the way of dignity, peace, and family connection.
This is the impact of compassionate sponsors. Through Plusgrade’s generosity, a son was able to return home when it mattered most.
