A Brother and Sister’s Journey Back to Grandma—Plusgrade

Flight Stories #1436 & #1437

Kelowna, British Columbia > Fredericton, New Brunswick

Sometimes the most important trips are the ones that bring you back to where you first felt safe.
Harley and Whitney grew up close to their grandmother, Barbara. When Harley moved to Saint John as a teenager, he struggled at school and found comfort at his grandparents’ home. He shared that during that time, they were his constant support. Many days were spent listening to their stories and learning from their life experiences.
Whitney remembers something different but just as meaningful. She described Barbara as the family’s “number one” for everything. Even while caring for their grandfather during his illness, Barbara remained steady and strong. Whitney shared memories of singing karaoke together at the Legion and in her grandmother’s home, where music was always part of who she was.
Now Barbara is in hospice care, and time is limited. Both Harley and Whitney explained that financial strain made last-minute travel impossible. Harley had just moved into a new home and covered significant moving costs while supporting his partner and her young daughter. Whitney was also in the middle of relocating and facing unexpected vehicle repairs.
Despite the challenges, they both knew they needed to go.
When their flights were approved, Harley wrote:

“That is such wonderful news! Thank you and everyone involved for making this happen, it is truly a blessing to have this opportunity in such stressful times.”

Because of the generosity of Plusgrade, a brother and sister were able to travel together and be with their grandmother during this tender chapter. Distance did not stand in the way of family.

Through Plusgrade’s partnership, two grandchildren were given the chance to return to the woman who helped shape their lives.
