When Bronwyn learned that her grandmother had entered palliative care she knew she wanted to be with her during her final days.
But getting there wasn’t easy.
Bronwyn had recently moved to Toronto to pursue her dreams as an artist, a decision that was difficult for both her and her grandmother. Working in a restaurant with unpaid time off and living paycheck to paycheck, she simply couldn’t afford the cost of travel. In her application, she shared that she had very limited funds available.
The relationship she described was much more than that of a grandchild and grandparent.
“My grandmother is more like a mother to me.”
She shared that the two have always been deeply connected.
“Everyone says I take after her. We are both strong-willed, independent, and have a funny sense of humour.”
When her grandmother first became ill, Bronwyn was by her side whenever she could be.
“When she first got sick, I was her caretaker. I went to appointments, chemo, I slept with her in the hospital.”
She added:
“I was there for as much as I could be. Not because it was expected, but because I wanted to be.”
Now, with her grandmother’s time limited, Bronwyn hoped for one more opportunity to be together.
“Being away from her during this time is incredibly hard. This flight would provide me the priceless opportunity to spend time with her before the end.”
Thanks to the generosity of Billy Bishop Airport, Bronwyn received a compassionate flight to Montreal, allowing her to spend precious time with her grandmother when it mattered most.
When she learned her flight had been approved, Bronwyn replied:
