Bertha came to Canada in 2007 and had not been able to return home to Hong Kong. When she received word that her father was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer suddenly, she knew she had to return home. Unable to afford a plane ticket to return home, her daughter encouraged her to apply to Give A Mile.

Bertha wrote: “My father has always been a role model to me… He always taught my siblings and I to live by kindness, respect and to be hardworking and humble. However, above all his one philosophy was to always, no matter what, be there for someone’s toughest moment, or a moment of goodbye, regardless of if you felt you weren’t there during the times in between…Nevertheless, it feels only right to not only honour the one philosophy he lived by, but to practice it now that it’s at his time of need, at his time of goodbye. I don’t want to have any regrets before he passes, or know that I didn’t utilizing every chance I had to spend with him.”

After meeting the criteria, Give A Mile gifted Bertha a flight of compassion so she can fulfill her father’s one philosophy.
