When Patricia was placed on hospice, two of the people who loved her most knew they had to get to her side.
Her mother, Christeen, and her younger sister, Robyn, had not seen Patricia in years, but both hoped they could be together with her one more time.
For Christeen, the journey was especially difficult.
Now in her late seventies, she relies on oxygen, uses a walker, and requires wheelchair assistance while travelling. Despite her own health challenges, she was determined to make the trip.
“My daughter is on very high oxygen and is not expected to live much longer. Her lungs are giving out. I have not seen her in about 5/6 years. I want to see her before she passes.”
Robyn shared the same urgency.
Growing up, the sisters were incredibly close.
“We grew up a very close family. My sister was a beautician and I was the baby sister that got to sit countless hours as she would practice on my hair.”
Although years and distance had separated them, the bond never disappeared.
My big sister helped grow me into the wonderful person I am today. I know that death is something we will all go through, but it’s hard to believe I may never see my sister again.”
Robyn was also deeply concerned about her mother making the trip alone. She wrote to Give A Mile asking if they could travel together because of Christeen’s health and mobility needs.
Thanks to the generosity of Give A Mile donors, both Christeen and Robyn received compassionate outbound flights to Salt Lake City, allowing a mother and daughter to travel side by side to be with Patricia during her final days.
When their flights were confirmed, Robyn shared a heartfelt message with the Give A Mile team:
