Lorrie applied for a compassionate flight to visit her Aunt Joann, who had recently entered hospice care after her cancer returned. Her aunt was now facing a rapid decline in her health.
But Lorrie’s trip was about more than a visit.
Her aunt’s husband, who is also in his eighties and uses a wheelchair, had been caring for her at home. In her application, Lorrie shared that her aunt had recently fallen while her uncle was helping her, and that she hoped to travel to Florida to support both of them and help arrange additional care.
At the same time, Lorrie hoped to do something else that meant a great deal to her family.
Her mother, who is 80 years old and homebound, had not been able to visit her sister even though she lived close by. The family was still grieving the unexpected loss of Lorrie’s Uncle Benji, who had passed away the previous year and had been her mother’s caregiver.
“We are a close knit family,” Lorrie wrote.
She explained that she wanted the opportunity to see her aunt again, help with her care, and take her mother to spend time with her sister.
One moment from the application stood out.
“When I told my Aunt I was trying to come see her, she said, Yippie. Even though she barely speaks at this point.”
After losing her job in 2025 and exhausting her unemployment benefits, Lorrie was unable to afford the cost of travel on her own. She shared that she and her daughter were currently living with her son while she searched for work.
In a follow-up email, Lorrie explained that hospice care was being arranged and that she hoped to help coordinate support for her aunt and uncle when she arrived.
