When Sarah learned that her stepfather, Ron, had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and given only a few months to live, she knew she wanted to see him again. But she wasn’t the only one.
Her daughter, Thalia, was hoping to make the journey too.
The family had moved to British Columbia less than a year earlier, and it had been three years since they had last seen Ron in person. The news of his diagnosis was devastating.
For Sarah, Ron has always been much more than a stepfather.
“This man took on a father role to me and an amazing grandpa to my daughter. He’s been more a father to me than my own biological father.”
She described him as someone who has supported their family through countless challenges.
“He’s been our rock through so many trials.”
For Thalia, Ron has been an equally important presence.
In her application, Sarah shared that he has been not only a grandfather, but also the only consistent male role model in her daughter’s life.
“She loves her papa so much and needs to see him before he passes.”
The timing could not have been more difficult. Sarah was recovering from an injury and receiving only benefits. With limited income, she was looking for small jobs she could manage physically in hopes of saving enough money for the trip.
More than anything, Sarah hoped she and her daughter could spend precious time with Ron while they still could.
“My daughter and I are devastated and my wish is for us to make it to see him.”
Thanks to the success of our Flight Heroes and their campaigns, Sarah and Thalia received compassionate flights to Ontario, giving them the opportunity to be with Ron and create meaningful memories together during this difficult chapter.
