A Flight That Reconnected a Brother and Sister After 31 Years — Toyota on the Park

Flight Stories #1411 and #1412

Winnipeg, Manitoba > Calgary, Alberta

Sometimes reconnection comes after decades of silence. Shirley shared that she had been estranged from her youngest brother, Allen, for 31 years. She had searched for him for much of that time, not knowing where life had taken him. When a hospital social worker reached out to her with news of his condition, the call came as both a shock and an unexpected opening for reunion.
Allen is currently receiving comfort-focused care in hospital and is expected to transfer to hospice. Learning that his time was limited, Shirley hoped for the chance to see him in person, something she had not imagined would be possible after so many years apart.
Because of her age, Shirley requested to travel with her son, Adam, who could support her emotionally and physically during the journey. Adam shared that he was just four years old the last time he saw his uncle, and that traveling together would allow them both to be present for this deeply meaningful visit.

Covering the cost of last-minute travel was not something the family could manage on their own. With limited income and no opportunity to plan ahead, they relied on the support of the care team — and ultimately, the generosity of Toyota on the Park, to make the trip possible.

Grace, the hospital social worker who referred Shirley and Adam to Give A Mile, later shared her gratitude, writing that the program made “a truly meaningful difference” for the family, the care team, and the health providers supporting Allen during this time.

Because of Toyota on the Park, Shirley and Adam were able to travel together — not just across provinces, but across years of separation — to reconnect with Allen when time mattered most.
