After being diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic cancer, Monsurat has been receiving palliative care in Canada while far away from the people she loves most.
But through every difficult moment, one heartbreak stayed heavier than all the others — being separated from her son, Yusuf, in Nigeria.
“My greatest heartbreak hasn’t been the illness itself, but the fear of not seeing my son one last time,” Monsurat shared.
Now, with her condition becoming more serious and time increasingly limited, her final wish was simple and deeply human: to go home.
To hold her son’s hand again. To be surrounded by family. To spend her remaining time in the comfort of love, familiarity, and connection.
But this journey could not happen alone.
Monsurat’s sister, Omobola, has become far more than a sibling during this chapter of life. She has been her full-time caregiver, closest companion, and steady support through the overwhelming challenges of terminal illness.
“My sister has always been my closest friend and confidante,” Omobola shared.
Watching her sister fight this illness while separated from her son has been heartbreaking.
As Monsurat’s health declined, Omobola knew she needed to stay by her side for the long international journey back to Nigeria. Physically and emotionally, Monsurat could not make the trip alone.
Financially, however, the situation felt impossible.
Monsurat is an uninsured visitor in Canada, and the family has spent nearly every available dollar covering medications, treatments, and palliative care costs. Omobola and her husband were already supporting a household of seven while trying to care for Monsurat full-time.
Still, the need to go never changed.
Because when time becomes precious, being with family matters more than anything else.
Thanks to the generosity of Lexus On The Park, Monsurat and Omobola were able to travel from Edmonton, Alberta to Lagos, Nigeria so Monsurat could return home to her son and loved ones.
This flight is more than transportation across continents.
It is a mother’s final journey home. A sister’s act of devotion. And a family’s chance to share love, comfort, and goodbye face-to-face instead of from far away.
Because no one should have to spend their final days separated from the people they love most.
