A Daughter’s Last Gift

Flight Story #1342

Halifax, Nova Scotia to Washington, D.C. — $624.17 CAD

From Halifax, Nova Scotia to Washington D.C., Katrina took one of the most difficult journeys of her life—a final trip to be with her father before he left this world.
Her father, who is only 65 years old, has lived with cancer for three years. After countless treatments and hospital stays he was now transitioning to hospice care at home.
When Katrina received the news, she was heartbroken. She said it felt impossible to imagine a world without her father in it. A man of resilience and humor, he had been the foundation of her strength. Even when her early life was marked by judgment and struggle, he never abandoned her. Despite family tensions and obstacles, he remained a steady presence in her life until she was old enough to see him freely.
As a mother herself, Katrina carried his lessons with her. She saw his kindness and determination reflected in the way she raised her children. She cherished his sense of humor, his drive, and the way he loved her children as his own. More than anything, she wanted to sit beside him, hold his hand, and tell him how deeply loved he was before time ran out.
Yet the flight to Baltimore seemed impossible. As the sole provider for her family in Nova Scotia, nearly every dollar went toward rent and bills, leaving little else. International travel meant not only paying for a costly ticket but also losing wages at work. The financial burden was too heavy to bear alone.
That was when Katrina described hearing from Give A Mile as “nothing short of a miracle.” She said: “I know just how important it is to tell this story and express how much this means to me and my family, but most of all my father who was in his end-of-life journey. He wanted more than anything to have me by his side, and with you and your team’s help (I write this in tears), this was made possible.”
And as her flight approached, Katrina wrote:

“I’m about to have the most beautiful gift of all!!! I don’t have the words to express the gratitude I have... I’ll soon be right beside my Dad.”

She also shared a treasured family photo: her dad holding her son last summer, with Katrina and her daughter beside them. “He does not look like this now,” she wrote, “but I will forever keep this picture of him in my heart.”
With the support of our Lexus On The Park, Katrina was able to take her flight of love and farewell. She sat beside her father, shared her gratitude, and gave him the peace of knowing his daughter was near. For Katrina, this wasn’t just about one last visit—it was about carrying her father’s legacy forward and ensuring he left this world surrounded by love.
Thank you Lexus On The Park for making this end of life reunion possible for Katrina and her dad.

Every donation helps people reach their loved ones for one last hug, smile, and farewell.
