Aimee is the eldest of five children, a nurse of 35 years, and someone who has spent much of her life caring for others. Throughout her career, she has helped families through some of life’s most difficult moments, supporting loved ones during their final days on earth.
Now, she found herself facing a deeply personal loss.
Aimee’s mother, Dorothy, has lived with Multiple Sclerosis since 2000. Recently, Aimee received the call every child fears.
“Mom has been placed on comfort care.” Later that same morning, she was informed that her mother had become unresponsive.
Although Aimee had moved from the United States to Canada in 2018, she remained close to her mother.
In her application, she shared:
“My mother has always been my strength. When going through tough times, my mom would always lend her ear. She would always listen and give her input although she would always let me make my own decision, even if it was the wrong one.”
When Aimee moved away, it was with her mother’s encouragement.
“With the encouragement of my mother, I lived my life the way I wanted to.”
But getting home was not easy. Aimee explained that work permit challenges and changing immigration rules had made it difficult to find work, leaving her months behind in rent and unable to afford the cost of travel.
More than anything, she wanted the chance to be with her mother.
“Desperately wishing to hug my mother one last time.”
Aimee also reflected on the special role she holds within her family:
“The oldest daughter, the oldest child, the one who will miss her for eternity.”
Thanks to the generosity of Lexus On The Park, Aimee received a compassionate flight to Rapid City, giving her the opportunity to be with her mother during this important time.
