Some promises are made quietly, but they carry a lifetime of meaning.
Halimo shared that her father has been living with brain cancer for more than two years. The cancer has now returned, and he is receiving palliative care in Toronto. Doctors have shared that he is in the final stages of life.
All she wants is the chance to stand beside him and say goodbye.
In her application, Halimo wrote that her father raised her and her siblings on his own after their mother passed away when she was just one year old. He brought their family to Canada from Somalia following the genocide in their home country. He was not only their father, but also the steady presence of both parents in one.
She described him as someone who never missed a birthday or a parent-teacher interview. The love and patience he showed shaped the way she now parents her own two sons. During her last visit, he told her that her children would thrive and succeed because she is their mother.
Her father made one request. He asked that his four children stand beside him when his time comes. Halimo wrote, “Please help me keep my word by honoring his wish. It’s been my honor being his daughter.”
Supporting a family of four on a small income, Halimo could not afford the cost of a last-minute flight.
