Love’s Final Journey

Flight Story #1310

From Mexico City, MX > Vancouver, CA – $1,205.83 CAD
Sahara was living in Belize, working 12 hours a day, six days a week at a grocery store. Even working that hard, she only earned enough to cover basic living expenses—food, rent, gas for her scooter. Saving for an international flight was impossible, but she had to find a way.
Her Canadian boyfriend, the man she had built a life with in Belize, was in Vancouver facing the end of his life. He had been diagnosed with terminal glioblastoma. Here at Give A Mile, this story especially tugged at our heartstrings, since this is the same disease that afflicted the inspiration of our organization, Ryan. Since September 2024, Sahara’s partner had endured two brain surgeries, radiation, and multiple rounds of chemotherapy. The aggressive treatments had left him even sicker and he was transitioning to palliative care, preparing for his last weeks.
They had been happy together before his diagnosis. Sahara described how they met in Belize, fell in love, and built a life together. Before him, she was a single mother, surviving day to day, not thriving. But with him, she found partnership and hope. Even as his illness forced them apart physically, their commitment to one another remained strong.
She was determined to get to Vancouver to care for him, to sit at his side, and offer companionship during his final days. However, from Belize, with limited income her options were complicated and expensive.
That’s when Sahara turned to Give A Mile for help. She shared openly about her challenges and her hope: to be there for her partner as he prepared for the end of his life. She asked for assistance to make this journey of compassion happen.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of Toronto Pearson International Airport, her request was answered.
Toronto Pearson’s sponsorship removed the barrier standing between Sahara and her partner. Their support allowed Sahara to travel across continents to reach Vancouver. She arrived ready to hold his hand, comfort him, and give him the dignity of not facing his last days alone. She got to fulfill the vow they had made to one another: to stay committed, even in the hardest moments.
We want to offer our heartfelt thanks to Toronto Pearson International Airport for sponsoring this flight of compassion. Your support didn’t just pay for travel—it created connection, dignity, and the comfort of presence at the end of life.

Every donation helps people reach their loved ones for one last hug, smile, and farewell.
