We Always Had Each Other

Flight Story #1483

London, Ontario → Calgary, Alberta — 92,800 WestJet Points

When Debara learned that her sister’s cancer had progressed and that she would be entering hospice care, she knew she wanted to be with her during this final stage of her life.
As a retiree living on a fixed income, the cost of airfare, accommodations, and transportation in Calgary would be difficult to manage. Debara shared that while she wanted to visit her sister before she passed, the financial burden of the trip would be a struggle.
The bond between the sisters has remained strong throughout their lives.
In her application, Debara shared that her sister spent much of her life caring for their brother and living in poverty. Although she never had children of her own, she loved hearing stories about Debara’s children and grandchildren.
“She lived through our life and stories.”
Even though distance sometimes kept them apart, they stayed connected through phone calls and FaceTime and supported each other whenever they could.
Debara reflected on the challenges they faced growing up together and the connection that carried them through.
“Our home life wasn’t the best growing up. But we always had each other.”
Now, as her sister prepares to enter hospice care, Debara hopes to be there once more.
“So in this last stage of her life I would like to be there with her and be able to support her this one last time.”
Thanks to the generosity of our donor Irene, Debara received a compassionate flight to Calgary, giving her the opportunity to spend precious time with her sister and support her when she was needed most.
