Across the World for One Last Goodbye: Thank You Toronto Pearson Airport

Flight Story #1330

Cape Town, South Africa > Vancouver, British Columbia — $1,111.67 CAD

The distance between continents can feel even greater when time is running out.
For Claudia, that distance became overwhelming when she learned her brother-in-law, Vincenzo, had been moved into hospice care. His health had declined quickly, and doctors shared that he was now in the final weeks of his life.
Vincenzo — known as Enzo to those who love him — has been much more than family to Claudia.
Since she was young, he was a steady and guiding presence in her life. After the loss of her father, Enzo stepped in as a source of strength and support. Over the years, he became someone she could always rely on — a mentor, a protector, and a constant in her life.
No matter what challenges came their way, Enzo was there.
When Claudia’s family faced difficult times, including raising a child with complex needs, he stood beside them and his support never wavered. His presence helped carry them through some of life’s hardest moments.
Now, everything has changed.
Enzo has lost the ability to speak and is becoming weaker each day. The illness is progressing quickly, and time together is becoming more limited.
For Claudia, being there is not just important — it is something she feels deeply in her heart.

“This visit is of immense emotional importance to our family,” “Being able to say goodbye in person would bring a sense of peace, connection, and closure during this painful time.”

But getting there is not simple.
Claudia lives in South Africa, while Enzo is in Vancouver, Canada. The journey is long, with flights taking nearly 35 hours. On top of that, her family has been facing ongoing financial hardship after losing income during the pandemic. Even now, they are still working to rebuild while caring for their son, who requires full-time support.
Traveling such a distance on short notice was simply not possible without help.
Claudia wanted the chance to sit beside him, to be present, and to offer the same love he had given her for so many years.

Thanks to the generosity of Toronto Pearson Airport, Claudia was able to make the journey from Cape Town, South Africa to Vancouver, British Columbia.

This flight gave her more than just a way across the world. It gave her the chance to be there — to say goodbye, to share memories, and to be with someone who had shaped her life in so many ways.

Because when moments like these come, being together is what matters most.
