Melissa never imagined she’d be trying to figure out how to say goodbye to her only sister from across an ocean.
Life had already given her more than enough to juggle: raising two daughters on her own, one with a chronic illness that makes every grocery trip more expensive, trying to help her other daughter with university costs, and working both full-time and part-time jobs just to keep up. Her mother, who was ill with M.S. and living with Melissa, passed away only months ago. On top of the heartbreak, her mother’s death presented a practical problem as well: the rent they’d shared suddenly doubled for Melissa.
In the midst of the chaos, the news came: her sister Jenn was dying.
Jenn, living in the United Kingdom, had faced cancer and its consequences for years. It began with breast cancer in 2014 and spread to her liver in 2018. After a few years of remission, it’s now in her lungs and spine. She is no longer well enough to travel herself. Doctors and counselors told Melissa that Jenn’s time was limited.
Melissa knew she needed to get to Jenn. Jenn wasn’t just her sister. She was her only sibling, her best friend, biggest support. The one person who really got her. The one who could make her laugh even on the worst days. Jenn’s kids—just 13 and 16—were facing losing their mom far too soon. Melissa wanted to be there for them too.
But buying a last-minute flight from Toronto to England? On her budget? It was impossible.
