A Son’s Flight to See His Mother One More Time—Mary’s Donation

Flight Story #1433

Vancouver, British Columbia > Toronto, Ontario — $418.91 CAD

Time feels different when both mother and son are facing serious health challenges. Steven shared that his mother, Vicky, is 86 years old and recently became ill, requiring hospitalization. She has since returned home but is also living with serious, health issues. At the same time, Steven himself is receiving hospice care.
In his application, Steven wrote simply, “This flight means a whole lot to me. It might be one of the last times I see her. I’m really hoping that I’m not too late to visit.”

He shared a favourite childhood memory with us: “I remember when I was younger, my mother got all us kids in the car to do a LONG day of errands. For doing that, we each got our own full box of our favourite cereal (Count Dracula!). We got to eat it all by ourselves (first and last time that happened!). My mom’s door has always been open to me”

For Steven, the cost of travel was impossible to manage on his own.
Through the support of his social worker, Siobhan, Steven applied for help. When the flight was approved, Siobhan wrote:

“This is extraordinary news. I’m almost tearful! Thank you and your team and the donors so very much.”

Because of the generosity of Mary, Steven was able to travel across the country to see his mother. Their support ensured that distance did not stand in the way of one more visit between a son and his mom.

This is what compassionate partnership makes possible. Through Plusgrade’s generosity, time together became possible when it mattered most.
