The timeline was painfully short. Lisa shared that her brother, Blake, suffered a cardiac arrest in his sleep and has been in ICU on life support at St. Clare’s Hospital ever since. After multiple tests showed no signs of brain activity, the family made the decision to follow his medical directive and remove life support.
Lisa had only days to get home.
She explained that she is currently unemployed and recovering from surgery. Living on a very limited income she had no way to afford a last-minute flight across the country. Still, being there before her brother was taken off life support felt essential.
Blake has lived with significant physical challenges since childhood, and Lisa shared how close they have always been. Even after moving to Alberta, they stayed connected through phone calls, messages, and letters. She often sent him photos and videos of his great niece, which brought him joy.
In her follow-up message, Lisa wrote:
“My brother will be taken off life support on Friday, so I need to get home before then.”
