A Sister’s Flight to Be With Her Brother — Flight Donor Irene

Flight Story #1356

Calgary, Alberta > Winnipeg, Manitoba – 78,500 WestJet Points + 51,983 Aeroplan Points

For Sarah, this flight meant time — time she feared she was running out of. Her brother Scott has been receiving care for a serious and life-limiting illness, and his health has been changing quickly. When she learned he had been transferred into palliative care, she knew she needed to return to Winnipeg to be with him and her family during these final days.
Sarah shared how deeply she cares for her brother. She described Scott as someone who brings joy into every room he enters — the kind of person who will offer you a ride to work, his last twenty dollars, or a laugh on a day when everything feels heavy. To his loved ones, his presence is steady and grounding. She wrote that Scott “sees you and accepts you as you are” and that he has always been the one who pulls people together, offering honesty, comfort, and encouragement whenever it’s needed most. To Sarah, he is simply home.
A few weeks earlier, Sarah had used the last of her savings to visit him in the hospital. When his condition worsened, she longed to return — but with a limited income, she had no way to afford another flight. She turned to Give A Mile with hope that she could be with her brother again while he was still able to connect and share moments with her.
Thanks to the generosity of Irene and our donors, Sarah’s flight was approved. Traveling from Calgary to Winnipeg gave her the gift of sitting at Scott’s side, talking with him, holding his hand, and being there for the kinds of conversations and quiet moments that families remember forever.
In her message to Give A Mile, Sarah shared how meaningful this visit has been:

"This has been an incredible gift and I can’t thank you enough…my brother hasn’t passed yet, so I’ve been able to spend all of this time with him. Scott is one of the strongest men I know, and he’s still fighting to stay with us."

She expressed how much this time has meant to her family, and how grateful she is for the support that made it possible.

Because of Irene and Give A Mile donors, Sarah was able to return home when her family needed her most. Each donated mile brought her closer to her brother — and helped create memories filled with love, comfort, and connection.

We are deeply grateful to our donor community. Your kindness continues to carry families to one another when every moment matters.

Every donation helps people reach their loved ones for one last hug, smile, and farewell.
