Give a Mile Holiday Giving 2019: Harold’s Story
What could be more compelling or more about holiday spirit than a story involving a young man? Harold from Calgary wrote to Give A Mile with a story of his 14-year old grandson Elijah in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. Elijah was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ewing Sarcoma in summer 2019, and he immediately began chemotherapy treatments, with radiation looming and a 20% success rate it was an anxious time for a teenager.
Harold made one trip to visit his daughter Shana, son-in-law, and Elijah since the diagnosis, but as a senior citizen on fixed income getting to see them again was out of his budget. Harold admits that technology is a challenge and is driven to spend more personal time with his grandson, Eli.
Harold reached out to Give A Mile, a charitable organization of 100% dedicated volunteers who take unused loyalty points and monetary donations to turn them into flights of compassion. Harold’s flight will be one that falls into the Give A Mile annual holiday giving campaign with the following goals to achieve by Christmas 2019:
- Commit 50 flight heroes
- Collect 3 Million loyalty points
- Raise $41,000 corporate and other donations
- Connect 60 flights of compassion
With only five years of giving, the success of Give A Mile’s special events and campaigns are fully dependent on the generosity of our donors and sponsors. This year the holiday campaign is supported by Points loyalty solutions, by Canada’s premier loyalty program aeroplan, and by Scotiabank banking and wealth management.
