Val is a mother of two beautiful boys, Ian and Liam. Ian is 14 years old and lives with Val in Calgary. Liam is 19 years old, is autistic, and is in the palliative phase of living with a brain tumor.
The parents are separated and Liam is living with his father in Edmonton. He receives all of his medical treatments there. Liam was diagnosed in March 2014 and was given a 12 month prognosis. He is no longer able to visit his mother and brother in Calgary due to failing health. Val is looking for support for her and Ian to go and visit Liam.
Val and Liam are very close. Val refers to him as her “forever baby” because she had planned her life around him. Val also has her own health concerns. She has been diagnosed with Asbergers Syndrome, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Greys disease. In 2013, Val had her thyroid removed and she has had many complications from the surgery. Val is now on financial disability support as a result of these health concerns. Val does not drive or have the financial means to travel to and from Edmonton.
Val and Ian desire to be with Liam as often as possible before he dies. She shared that one of her fears is not being there for her son when he dies.
