Van is a very pleasant 50 year old man that has been living and working in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories for the last several years. Just before Christmas of this year, Van was diagnosed with metastatic Cancer likely with lung as the primary site. Unfortunately he is terminal with no possible curative treatments available. The cancer has spread quite significantly in his body and the prognosis is 6 months or less. As with the vast majority of metastasized cancers it will continue to affect quality of life, cognition, and physical abilities. He struggles with pain but remains stoic during this extremely difficult time.
He was born and raised in Vietnam and his direct and extended family still live there. It is Van’s wish to return to Vietnam and be with his family for the time that he has left. He had been working in Yellowknife before he was recently laid off work and is now just making ends meet on his Employment Insurance Benefits. These benefits will end and once he leaves the country and he will have no income and his claim is terminated. I am respectfully requesting that the Give A Mile program assist Van with a one way ticket for him to return to his family in Vietnam where he will be supported by his family with his cultural and spiritual beliefs during the end of life stages. He is hopeful that some of the traditional medicines used in his county will help him extend or enhance the time he has left.
