Hello, we are Matt and Anna. We have two beautiful children, Zoey who is 2.5 years old, and Jack, who is 8 months old. Jack was born prematurely and had to fight so hard for his life (completely unrelated to his current diagnosis). We were overjoyed when after 23 days in NICU we could finally take Jack home and start our life as a family of four. Our happiness didn’t last very long as we noticed that Jack wasn’t reaching any of his motor milestones, although cognitively very bright and alert.
In December 2016 Jack was finally diagnosed to have spinal muscular atrophy type 1, a neuromuscular disease that causes mortar neurons in the spinal cord to weaken and die. Eventually the muscles will atrophy and Jack will lose his ability to swallow and breath. Usually babies with SMA type 1 have a life expectancy of two years, with death at about 10 months of age. This devastating diagnosis is not just heart breaking for us but also for Jack’s grandparents, aunts and uncles. Anna is originally from Germany and her parents still live there. They are both 66 years old and now retired. Jack’s first and sadly potentially last birthday is May 22nd and his grandparents would love to spend that special day with him. Due to their age and minor health issues it would be so very much appreciated if Give A Mile could make it possible for both of them to fly to Canada. It would be wonderful if they could visit Jack together and have a travel companion for their long and strenuous trip. We appreciate so much that you consider our family for your fantastic program.
