This flight home will allow me to spend Christmas with my dying mother. After a brave 6½ year battle with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer, my mother Tanja has decided to stop treatment and this will be her last Christmas. She has endured several dozen rounds of chemotherapy, two stem-cell transplants, and many hospitalizations, but it has become clear that her cancer is incurable and has taken a great toll on her. Her body is now rejecting multiple forms of chemotherapy and myeloma medications. Based on her decision, her wonderful and supportive oncologist at MD Anderson, Dr. Wong, has informed our family that she likely has less than 4 months left with us.

My mom grew up playing on Surfside Beach in southeast Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico. Our family intends to bring her back to Surfside for one last Christmas together, an opportunity to celebrate her life while she’s still healthy enough to enjoy it. Spending the holiday with her three children and four grandchildren at the beach will be the fulfillment of a lifelong wish for her.

As you might imagine, the cost of my mom’s treatments—doctor visits at MD Anderson, medication, insurance, transportation—have already stretched our family’s finances thin. While we will find a way to make this trip happen, I would feel honored to have the support of Give A Mile.

We are so thankful for all the miles donated and the help this provides us to award flights to people seeking hope, hugs and togetherness with loved ones in their time of greatest need.
