The flight recipients mom was diagnosed with mylo fibrosis – bone marrow cancer. With all her other medical issues she is not well enough for treatment of the cancer. She has been receiving two blood transfusions a week and is now receiving two platelet transfusions a week. Her lungs are now starting to fail and her heart is not pumping enough blood. Her body is swelling and she has lost her appetite. Today the flight recipients were told she has one to three weeks of life left. The blood transfusions are continuing only to prolong her life until everyone can come to say goodbye. They have been requested to see palliative care Friday and a Hospice. The flight recipients are devastated as originally her life prognosis was for 16 months but they knew with their mothers compromised health that it could be shorter, but they didn’t expect her to progress in her illness so quickly, and certainly did not anticipate the diagnosis of one to three weeks that they received.

The flight recipient and her sister, Trish, have not had a chance to go and say goodbye. They can’t afford last minute airfare and the doctor has requested that they come as soon as possible. Because their mom lives out of province in London Ontario they will also have to pay for accommodations which complicates their ability to afford airfare. Their youngest sister does live in the same area as their mom but is suffering from an auto immune disorder so having them stay with her compromises her health.
