The flight recipient, Zach (age 23), moved to Calgary 6 years ago with five of his siblings to work with the family’s home building/construction company.
Several weeks ago Zach began to have trouble breathing. He was treated for asthma before starting to cough blood. At a local emergency room, doctors ran some tests and sent him home. The next morning, Zach was called and told to come immediately back to Emergency where he was told that they believed that he had lung cancer and further testing was required. Subsequent tests revealed Good Pastures, an autoimmune disease that effects the lungs and liver. Good Pastures is extremely uncommon and only 37 people in Canada have ever been diagnosed. Zach was told that his condition could be manageable with treatment however, can turn fatal within hours.
For the next two weeks Zach was held in the overflow at the hospital while physicians tried to determine the best course of treatment for him. After several conversations with the doctors, concerns were raised over Zach’s care for the next 9 months given that his potentially terminal condition would make him very sick and unable to care for himself while he received intensive treatment. His siblings pooled their money together to bring Zach’s mother out from Ontario to Calgary to support Zach.
On Monday, May 22, 2017, Zach was transferred to another hospital, where he began plasma treatment to prepare his body for the three months of chemotherapy treatment followed by six months of treatment of his Good Pastures diagnosis.
On Friday May 25 2017, Zach’s condition turned critical – he could no longer breathe, had a fever and his liver was failing. He was admitted to the ICU where he was placed on life support.
Zach’s family is a low income family and cannot afford airfare for his father and brother to join the rest of the family here in Calgary to be with Zach. The family wishes to reunite Zach with his father and oldest brother so they can say goodbye to Zach and provide the support and love of their family at this time.
