The flight recipient, Celia, is 56 years old. She came to Canada in 2008 to work under the Live-in Caregiver program. Shortly after her arrival she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer (Dx 2009). She had a surgery right away to remove her right breast. After the surgery, her doctors told her was cancer free. Unfortunately, now her cancer has come back after having several tests a few months ago. This time, the cancer cells are more aggressive and have spread to her bones (spine), liver, and brain. She is in stage IV cancer now. her disease made her unable to do her job anymore, and it is sad to say, she is the major bread winner for her family back home in the Philippines. Now she can’t even take care of herself without the help of her younger sister. Her younger sister is the only family she has here in Canada. Her sister is a caregiver too and is now on leave from her job to take care of the flight recipient. This means both are not able to earn a living at the moment to support ourselves.
Her family back home, especially her elderly mother, wants her to return home. That is her mothers wish. Her mother is suffering from kidney stones and won’t be able to come to Canada. The flight recipients wish is to go back to the Philippines to spend some quality time with her family. She knows it will be a burden for her sister as it’s just the two of them living here in Canada with no other immediate family that can help to provide care. She is hoping that she can go back home soon with the help of kind-hearted people.
