I am applying for this flight request on behalf of my family. We are a family of 7 (Mom and Dad, 5 kids with an age range from 6 months to 9 years. Our third child called Miracle Asahchop was born on July 12, 2014, with a heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). In the past, he has had 7 cardiac catheterizations and one major emergency surgery hear at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. Due to the complexity of his heart condition the major surgery by physicians at the University of Alberta could not completely resolve this heart condition. This TOF has resulted in a lack of energy and fatigue after a long walk or plays with siblings or friends in school. This has made Miracle to distant himself from his siblings or friends when they play thus affecting his social interaction as well as playing on his psychology negatively. He often turns blue due to this TOF. His cardiologist (Dr. Tim Colen) is aware of all these challenges Miracle is going through. Dr. Colen has been making every effort to ensure the best for Miracle. To completely resolved the TOF Miracle needs a major heart surgery by a specialized and experienced cardiac surgeon in cases similar to that of Miracle. This type of specialized cardiac surgeon is not at the University of Alberta. Dr. Colen has successfully convinced Alberta Health Services to cover the cost of the surgery out of the province. There is an experienced cardiac surgeon at the University of Toronto who will perform the surgery.
Considering that this is going to be a major surgery out of our home town Edmonton, Miracle needs the support of the family during this procedure. This will help facilitate his recovery after the surgery. He cannot go through this process without both parents and his siblings. Just the fact he has to go through this procedure is emotionally depressing. So if he is separated from parents and siblings it will not help him and the psychological impact on his siblings will also not be the best. In addition, if only both parents travel with Miracle no one will be available to take care of the other siblings back here in Edmonton. We have no additional child support or family in the city and we will go for almost a month for the procedure and recovery.
Alberta Health Service will cover the cost of the surgery out of Province and the flights of Miracle and one parent. We are applying to request for flight to cover an additional parent and Miracle’s siblings. This will allow us to give Miracle all the support he will need during this procedure.
