Our Inspiration

Outlined below are a few of the key things that inspired the idea for Give A Mile and were key in making what we are trying to accomplish reality.

Ryan Westerman: inspired hundreds of people on his blog (ryanwesterman.blogspot.com), as they followed his battle against brain cancer with grace, humour and optimism. In this book, Stop, Drop and Smile Ryan shared his insights and incredible strength as he and his wife, Tasha, face unimaginable circumstances while raising their son, Talyn. His positive outlook and desire to help others is something that will inspire anyone to believe that the life we are given is nothing short of miraculous.

Kiva lenders combat poverty daily by making small loans to borrowers around the world. We believe in-fair access to affordable capital for people to improve their own lives. Often only a relatively small amount of money stands in the way of Kiva borrowers and their dreams. Whether it’s a Kenyan farmer who needs $500 in order to double her grain production, or a young Bolivian woman who lacks the $1,500 tuition for nursing school, Kiva lenders provide a hand up to these and countless other borrowers. Kiva changes lives by one loan of $25 at a time.

Start-up Weekend: Give A Mile was born out of Calgary Start-up Weekend. It is where Give A Mile went from just and idea to something that is real. Start-up Weekends are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if start-up ideas are viable. On average, half of Start-up Weekend’s attendees have technical or design backgrounds, the other half have business backgrounds. Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practicing LEAN Start-up Methodologies and building a minimal viable product. On Sunday evening teams demo their prototypes and receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts.
